Most candles found in supermarkets are made from paraffin, a petroleum derivative. They are cheap to produce, but when burned, they release compounds that we would rather not breathe in our living rooms. Soy wax is something completely different — and it's worth understanding why.

What is soy wax

Soy wax is obtained from the soybean plant through a process of hydrogenation of vegetable oil. It is 100% natural, biodegradable, and renewable. At Hëra, we use it as the base for all our candles because we believe that what enters your home should be clean from the source.

Paraffin vs. soy wax: the real differences

Paraffin burns faster and produces soot — that black stain that appears on jars and on walls near where you place your candles. Soy wax has a lower melting point, which means the fragrance is released more gradually and consistently, filling the room evenly without that aggressive initial peak.

Furthermore, soy wax is water-soluble. When your candle is finished, cleaning the jar is as easy as hot water and soap. Paraffin, on the other hand, requires solvents or boiling water. A small detail that makes a difference in everyday life.

Why scents also matter

It's not enough to have good wax. Inferior quality fragrances contain phthalates — substances that act as endocrine disruptors and are released when burned. At Hëra, we only work with phthalate- and paraben-free fragrances, carefully selected so that the scent filling your home is as clean as the wax that carries it.

Our candles are made in small batches in our workshop in Reus. We control every step of the process: pouring temperature, resting time, fragrance quantity. It's not mass production — it's craftsmanship with discernment.
