What are wax melts and how do you use them? Complete beginner's guide

¿Qué son los wax melts y cómo usarlos? Guía completa para principiantes

"Flameless, smokeless, worry-free — just pure aroma that transforms any corner of your home."

If you've never heard of wax melts, you're about to discover one of the cleanest, most versatile, and economical ways to scent your home. If you're already familiar with them but aren't sure how to make the most of them, this guide is for you too.

What exactly are wax melts?

Wax melts are small portions of scented wax — without a wick, without a direct flame — that melt in an electric or tea light warmer to release their fragrance. The wax doesn't burn away: it simply melts and solidifies again as it cools. The aroma is released little by little, filling the room softly and consistently.

At Hëra, we make them with the same 100% natural soy wax we use in our candles, free from toxins and phthalates. The difference lies in the format — and the possibilities it offers.

Wax melts vs. candles: which to choose?

  • Wax melts: flameless, ideal if you have children or pets at home.
  • Wax melts: more economical — they yield more per euro than a conventional candle.
  • Candles: create visual ambiance with the flame, perfect for special moments.
  • Both: at Hëra, we use natural soy wax, non-toxic and vegan.

How to use a wax melt step by step

1. Choose your warmer

You can use an electric warmer (safer and more controllable) or a tea light warmer with a 4-hour candle underneath. The important thing is that the top dish is deep enough to hold the melted wax.

2. Place the wax melt in the dish

One or two portions are enough depending on the size of the room. For small spaces like a bathroom, one is sufficient. For living rooms, use two.

3. Light and enjoy

In a few minutes, the wax melts, and the aroma begins to spread. Leave the warmer on for 1 to 4 hours — when the scent weakens, it's time to change the wax.

4. Easily change the wax

When the wax solidifies again, you can remove it with a cotton ball or wait until it's semi-solid and remove it whole. The dish can be cleaned with hot water and soap.

Hëra Tip: Don't mix very different fragrances in the same warmer — the result can be confusing. If you want to experiment, try scents from the same family first: two floral scents, or a citrus with a green one. At Hëra, you'll find collections designed to combine well with each other.

How long do wax melts last?

It depends on the quality of the wax and the fragrance concentration. Ours are formulated to release aroma for several sessions before they need to be changed — you'll notice the scent gradually softening with use. When the aroma has almost disappeared, it's time to renew.

A box of Hëra wax melts lasts considerably longer than a candle of the same price, making them the most economical option for those who want their home to always smell good.

Who are wax melts ideal for?

Wax melts are perfect for those who want flexibility: to change the scent according to the moment, day, or mood, without committing to an entire candle. They are also the ideal gift for someone who has just moved or who doesn't yet have a warmer — a perfect excuse to discover the world of natural aromas.
